land reclamation.
-The process by which seriously disturbed land surfaces are stabilized against the hazards of wind and water erosion. Surface mining for coal is responsible for almost one-half of the total land area disturbed in the United States. The drastic disturbance of the overburden severely changes the chemical and physical properties of the resulting spoils. These altered properties often create a hostile environment for seed germination and subsequent plant growth. Unless vegetative cover is established almost immediately, the denuded areas are subject to both wind and water erosion that pollute surrounding streams with sediment.

RELECTIONS
Singapore is in great need of land for housing. Being a globalised country, it had found ways to curb the problem, by land reclaimation. This is done to broaden the coastline and to get rid of swamps. Land reclaimation is practised to allow countries with land constraint. It has a positive impact as is provides countries with more land. However, land reclaimation is expensive and can only be practised in developed countries. Also, people living as reclaimed land will experience a greater shock during natural water occuring disasters.

How does singapore reclaim land?
1)Landfill.
-reclaim land from the coast and the swamps. It is also used in reclamation works involving the merging of islands.
divided into 5 main stages.
-Piles are first forced into the seabed to make it stable.
-These piles ensure that the land will not collapse when put into use.
-A sand wall is then built to keep sea water out.
-Sand stored at the sea is sucked up
-Sand fills enclosed area and spread around the area
-Sand is compressed
-Granite wall built to prevent soil erosion by waves
-Vegetation and trees are grown to prevent soil erosion
-Land ready for used in 1 to 5 years
In the early years, the fill materials evacuated from the hills in Bedok, Siglap, Tampines and Jurong were used for filling the reclamation areas, which is why Singapore is virtually flat now. In recent years, sea sand obtained from the seabed is the main source of fill materials for reclamation. The reclamation contractors import the sea sand from the neighbouring countries such as Indonesia.
